The song I chose is “Back to Black” from Amy Winehouse. She was a great singer who passed away in 2011 when she was 27 years old. She was born in Camden Town and had a gig at spitalfield market at 2010. The song back to black was written to blame her ex-husband for his love affair back to his ex-girlfriend. Amy Winehouse went through a really hard and dark period of time, even though that album won 5 Grammy awards and made her become supper successful at that time. And the first time, when she stood on the stage singing a song, she was a very strong and powerful young girl with muscle only 18 or 19. And gradually became more and more skinny by the bad influence of drugs and alcohol, and also the worse conditions psychologically influenced by her father, ex-husband and also the continuous attentions paid to her by reporters and the public. Those are the reasons that destroyed her gradually.
First of all, I was thinking to use one material changing into another one to show this kind of physical transformation. So, I did a lot of tests to express this feeling. And then I found it was not strong enough to show the contrast.
So based on that, I would like to reflect this transformation into using different materials but painted them all in black colour, which there is no difference from seeing them. But the only way of tell them apart it touching and feeling the texture of it. People have to get really closed to touch the material and there could be some interaction with people, space and the instrument inside. And the aim is to design a tambourine museum rather than a store for selling or retailing.
